NZMA calls for more refugee support
The
New Zealand Medical Association (NZMA) is adding its voice
to calls for New Zealand to increase its support for
refugees caught up in the continuing crisis in the
Mediterranean.
“This is a humanitarian issue and New
Zealand needs to make an immediate and meaningful
contribution to assist those in need,” says NZMA Chair Dr
Stephen Child.
“New Zealand has a strong human rights
record and extensive experience in supporting and
successfully resettling refugees.
“The need is great.
The organisations closely involved in providing this support
have said we have the capacity—we need to show we have the
will to help where we can,” says Dr Child.
The United
Nations has already announced that New Zealand is to take
another 100 refugees on top of the current quota, although
the Government is yet to confirm this.
“As Human Rights
Commissioner Dame Susan Devoy says, New Zealand hasn’t
increased our refugee quota in nearly 30 years, we can and
should do
more.”

Any number of movie examples come to mind, beginning with Rudolf Valentino’s role (over a century ago) as the romantic Arab hero in The Sheik... More
