Taranaki organised a Peoples Climate Picnic today in New
Plymouth in solidarity with the Global Peoples Climate
Marches happening around the world in the lead up to the UN
Conference on Climate Change in Paris. The picnic was
entertained by speakers, followed by a flash mob in Centre
City and a street march through town.
"We organised a 'flash-flood mob' today to remind people of the very real effects we will see from climate change here in Taranaki. If we get a 6m sea-level rise the CBD will be a Sea-B-D. This mall, the library, the museum, the Richmond Centre and all the shops up to Brougham Street will go underwater. Many scientists say that with storm surges and erosion this is a very real possibility by the end of this century." said Climate Justice Taranaki member Emily Bailey.
The event was organised by members of Avaaz, Climate Justice Taranaki, Taranaki Energy Watch, Taranaki Seed Savers, the Green Party, Amnesty International, Forest and Bird, and the Labour Party.
Thousands are marching around the country today.
