National Should Stop Pretending It Stands For Lower Taxes

The Taxpayers’ Union is fuming that Finance Minister Bill English has ruled out tax cuts as part of this month’s Budget, and has suggested to a business audience in Wellington that the oft-flaunted reductions in tax may be some years off. Taxpayers’ Union Executive Director, Jordan Williams, says:

“This Government’s debt problem has been exacerbated by wasteful spending, not a shortage of revenue. Every year this Government has spent more than $1.3 billion of taxpayers’ money on corporate welfare. Despite the promises every election, there are still as many pen pushing bureaucrats in Wellington as anytime under the Clark Government.”

“The National Party’s low tax platform was a sham. Despite the billboards promising “no new taxes” they have introduced four new taxes since the last election. If all that juicy new revenue doesn’t justify tax cuts what the heck does under this high tax, high debt, big spending government?”
