Royal tour kicks off with falling support for the monarchy

Media Release: Royal tour kicks off with falling support for the monarchy

"On the eve of Prince Harry and his wife Meghan's Royal visit, it's clear the popularity of the young Royals isn't growing support for the monarchy amongst young New Zealanders," said Lewis Holden, campaign chair of New Zealand Republic.

A poll commissioned by New Zealand Republic in May, at the time of Prince Harry and Meghan's wedding, found that only 24% of 18 to 30-year-olds supported the next British monarchy as New Zealand's head of State. The poll was conducted by Curia with 1,000 respondents and has a margin of error of 3.2%.

"The results clearly reflect the trend that New Zealand Republic has observed over the past few years - while Kiwis might enjoy the celebrity and spectacle of Royalty, that doesn't equate to love of monarchy. More and more Kiwis want a New Zealander as our head of State" continued Mr Holden.

"Prince Harry and Meghan have just visited Fiji, a republic within the Commonwealth, to much interest. The transition to a republic doesn't mean we lose Royal visits and in fact results in a more mature relationship with the UK" concluded Mr Holden.
