New science fellowships welcomed by the Royal Society of New Zealand

The Royal Society of New Zealand says it applauds the decision by Hon Dr Wayne Mapp to introduce new fellowships for emerging scientists with significant funding allocated over the next four years.

Royal Society of New Zealand Chief Executive Dr Di McCarthy says:

“The Royal Society of New Zealand is very pleased to be working with the Government in supporting early career and emerging researchers in New Zealand through the establishment of the new Rutherford Discovery Fellowships.

“We believe these fellowships will provide a wonderful opportunity for some of our brightest young scientists to further their research so they can contribute to New Zealand’s economic and social development.

“By providing a stable career path, we aim to encourage them to progress and become future science and technology leaders.”

The new scheme will be administered by the Royal Society of New Zealand with the funds coming from the Government.

Details of the fellowships are linked with the upcoming Budget on 20 May and therefore cannot be announced yet.
