“Auckland’s Public Transport Network:
Branding And
Theming Designs On Display”
16 July 2001
Auckland’s design community has risen to the challenge of creating design concepts for the region’s public transport system.
Over 30 entries for the region’s public transport network branding and theming competition were received from Auckland’s top architects, designers and marketers by the cut off date last Friday 13 July.
Launched by Auckland Regional Council in conjunction with all of the local councils of the region, the competition is an integral part of ongoing plans to improve the quality of Auckland’s public transport system.
“This is an important stage in ensuring public transport is recognised as one continuous network,” said ARC Transport Committee Chairman Les Paterson.
“We’re working towards an integrated network – these design concepts will help us to develop a consistent image for public transport and stations across the whole of Auckland,” said Cr Paterson.
“Operators are part of a consultation process for the design competition phase, and will have ongoing involvement in its implementation in the future.”
The design concepts are on display at the Waitemata Waterfront Design Centre and Cr Paterson urges Aucklanders to visit the Centre, take a look at the designs and comment on them.
“It is important that the public has a say in how the public transport system will look in the future,” he said. “Not only for themselves but on behalf of the generations of future users.”
“The judges will be taking the public’s comments into consideration before they pick the finalists,” said Cr Paterson.
By 6 August 2001 the judging panel, made up of representatives from the Designers Institute of New Zealand, the New Zealand Institute of Architects, the marketing profession, councils and the rail and bus industries, will choose five finalists.
In stage two of the competition these finalists will be asked to develop their ideas further. The final winner will then be engaged to develop their design into Auckland’s Passenger Transport Brand and Station Theme.
Aucklanders are invited to view and comment of the concepts between 17 July to 6 August by visiting The Waitemata Waterfront Design Centre (the Old Central Post Office building), Queen Elizabeth Square, Downtown Auckland between 9am to 6pm on weekdays and 10am to 4pm on weekends and public holidays.
