“Laly Haddon to chair Hauraki Gulf Forum”

Ngati Wai Trust Board Chairman and former Maori All Black Laly Haddon is the new Chairman of the Hauraki Gulf Forum.

Mr Haddon was elected unopposed at the Forum’s meeting today and fills the vacancy left when its previous Chairman Philip Warren died suddenly on January 23.

A resident of Pakiri in the Rodney District, where he also runs a tourist venture, Mr Haddon has been the Forum’s Deputy Chairman since May 2000.

Auckland Regional Council Parks and Heritage Committee Chairman Bill Burrill was chosen unopposed as the Forum’s Deputy Chairman. Both men term’s will run until the next triennial local government elections in October 2004.

Mr Haddon says the Forum brings together diverse group of important stakeholders in the Hauraki Gulf Marine Park and he is proud to be chosen as its Chairman.

“The issues we face won’t get any easier but I know there is tremendous respect amongst the Forum members and a commitment to do the best we can for the Hauraki Gulf,” Mr Haddon says.

The Hauraki Gulf Forum is administered by the ARC and integrates management of statutes and districts. It promotes the conservation and sustainable management of the natural, historic and physical resources of the Hauraki Gulf for the benefit and enjoyment of its peoples and communities.

Forum members include representatives of all local authorities adjoining the Gulf or its catchments, representatives of the Minister of Conservation, Fisheries and Maori Affairs, together with iwi representatives.
