Auckland City Pensioners Preparing for the Worst

Pensioner Action Group

26 June 2002

Representatives from Auckland City pensioner housing sites across the city have agreed to continue their stand against being relocated if the sales programme goes ahead. Their meeting on Monday also resolved to spread news about the move to only pay 25% of their net superannuation instead of the 50% rent increase due from 1 July. This follows the personal stand being taken by Maureen Alexander, from the Anglesea Street pensioner site in Freemans Bay. 25% is seen as a fair rent as demonstrated by HNZ's policy of 25% for its own tenants.

At least a couple of sites which are targeted for sale in the first 4 years are already united in refusing to move if forced to relocate under the Council's present sales plans.

Despite the Council's recent decision to delay the sales until any government interest had been established, it was considered important to be prepared for the worst. The Council Housing Action Group has initiated a pledge campaign signing up committed volunteers who will physically blockade the homes of pensioners resisting eviction.
