United Water wins contract with the
Ruapehu District Council

United Water has been awarded a management, maintenance and operations contract with the Ruapehu District Council. The contract commences on November 1 2002 and will be initially for two years, followed by two four year renewal periods.

Ruapehu District is a rural region located 320km south of Auckland, with approximately 15,000 residents in a number of communities.

A key factor in United Water’s success was its proven ability in the provision of asset management, an area that the Ruapehu District Council was seeking to improve on its current operations.

Ruapehu District Council Chief Executive Chris Ryan said the outcome of the whole process has been most successful and the council was looking for a partner to form a medium to long term relationship in order to obtain best value for money.

“With United Water, council will have a water services provider which has demonstrated the strongest capability in terms of asset management. Of the four asked to tender, United Water took a long term view and expressed its wish to provide a service to the Ruapehu District for the full 10 years, and a second 10 year period as well,” Mr Ryan said.

United Water’s Tony Lines is delighted with the outcome. “We have been operating in New Zealand since 1997 and have delivered many benefits to our customers in Papakura. We have improved water quality, undertaken significant improvements to the network and delivered high levels of customer service. We are looking forward to helping the Ruapehu District Council deliver these benefits to their residents.”

The awarding of the contract followed an open market competitive tendering process that saw 16 registrations of interest as principal contractors and 12 from sub-contractors. Following evaluation, four were chosen to provide tender proposals.

Besides asset management, United Water will be responsible for the operation and maintenance of several small water and wastewater treatment facilities, 117km of water pipes, 97km of wastewater pipes, 3670 wastewater connections, 4570 water connections and 38km of stormwater pipes.
