Celebrating
Age in Manukau
International Day of the Older Person, celebrating positive ageing and the value that older people bring to communities will be held on Friday 27 September.
Age Concern Counties Manukau, with support from Manukau City Council, has organised a special event at the Auckland Regional Botanic Gardens from 10am to 2.30pm. Entertainment, crafts, stalls and information are all part of the day’s programme. A free concert will be held, including jazz, choir and sing-along. Seated exercises, graduated walks and free health checks are also a feature of the day.
Besides providing funding support, Council will be hosting a marquee full of information and displays about its services and facilities for older people. “There is a diverse range of services designed for or suited to older people, including library services, art centres, housing, park walks and aquacise classes at council swimming pools,” says Diane Maloney, manager for community and leisure services.
Staff from Council’s recreation centres will also be there, providing fitness assessments and ‘have a go’ sessions for sports like table tennis, golf putting, badminton and indoor bowls.
Also, grandparents are encouraged to take part in kite making activities with grandchildren who are attending school holiday programmes at Council’s recreation and leisure centres.
