New Lane For Merging Traffic On Southern Motorway

New Lane For Merging Traffic On Southern Motorway

As of Saturday 1 February, there will be changes to the southbound lane layout between Khyber Pass and Gillies Ave. As a result, motorists entering the motorway from the Khyber Pass on-ramp will no longer need to merge with traffic immediately.

The left lane, which was previously dedicated for vehicles exiting at Gillies Ave, will now split to allow traffic to either continue straight ahead or to exit. This new lane configuration is an important part of Stage 1 (Khyber Pass to Gillies Ave) of Transit’s Central Motorway Junction upgrade project.

Transit New Zealand Regional Manager, Wayne McDonald, explains that the new merging lane will significantly reduce lane changing manoeuvres between the Khyber Pass on-ramp and the Gillies Ave off-ramp which is also likely to improve traffic flow along this critical motorway section. Mr McDonald advises motorists entering the motorway from Khyber Pass to make use of the new lane arrangement and delay merging until after the Gillies Ave off-ramp.

Transit thanks motorists for their co-operation.
