Red and green people signal the start of Road Safety Week in Wellington City

Over 40 red and green people will move throughout the city and converge at Midland Park at 12.30pm on Monday 10 March, to launch Road Safety Week (10-14 March).

During the last five years, 720 pedestrians have been injured by vehicles in the Wellington Region, with 416 of these people injured in Wellington City.

“Road Safety Week is focusing on pedestrian safety with a simple message about copying the red and green people on the traffic signals and for drivers to take care at pedestrian crossings,” says Cr. Terry McDavitt, chairman of the Regional Land Transport Committee.

Throughout the week, actors from the New Zealand College of Performing Arts will be dressed as red and green people. They will do street performances and distribute promotional information throughout the Wellington Region at peak commuter times. They will be joined on different occasions by the Wellington City Council’s road safety zebra mascot.

“Every day 20,000 commuters pour through the railway station coming from the Hutt Valley and the Kapiti Coast. We want to tackle the behaviour that has led to one in three road injuries in Wellington City involving pedestrians,” Cr. McDavitt says.

Greater Wellington – The Regional Council is supporting Road Safety Week, together with the road safety co-ordinators from the city and district councils.
