Whangapoua Harbour a Coromandel Gem
Whangapoua Env.Protection Soc.Inc
'The Whangapoua Harbour is one of the gems of the Coromandel. It is an exceptional fish breeding and nursery habitat, rich in kai moana, bird life, offshore fisheries, fin fisheries, mangrove resource and recreational resources.'
A Malaysian timber company wants to build a huge timber mill in the steep headwaters above the Whangapoua Harbour directly below Castle Rock.
The mill will pollute the Whangapoua harbour and environs with smog, chemicals, lights and noise.
Ernslaw's application for a resource consent actually asks to be permitted to discharge into local streams.
The mill is proposed in an inappropriate site and should not be built in a flood prone water catchment. A number of safer sites have been ignored.
