FEEDBACK SOUGHT ON MANUREWA PLANS

Manukau City Council is now calling for feedback on the revised draft concept plan for Manurewa Town Centre.

This is the second round of feedback being sought after a good response to its first release in 2001. Submissions from the first round of consultation were heard at Council's Hearings Committee in 2002.

Project leader, Amanda Harland, says Council is keen to hear further feedback from the community.

The plan is a long-term approach to revitalising the town centre which has been in decline over the last few years. Ms Harland says it will take a collaborative approach from Council, businesses and the community to achieve the plans aims.

The town centre went from four mud huts in the early 1900's to one of the fastest growing dynamic shopping centres of the 60s and 70s.

Increased competition from nearby centres saw some of the major retailers leave Southmall. Over time the centre has attracted less well established, lower end shops that have failed to attract the shoppers.

In March 2000, Manukau City Council prioritised Manurewa Town Centre as to undergo a visioning exercise. This was done with the local community to investigate options for redevelopment and revitalisation.
