Funding approved for Mackays Crossing overbridge on SH1
Delays and traffic crashes on State Highway 1 north of Wellington will be reduced with the go-ahead by Transfund New Zealand to build a four-lane overbridge at Mackays Crossing.
The Transfund board agreed yesterday to fund the project at a total cost of $17 million. The project comprises construction of a four-lane bridge over the railway line, improved road alignment and improved access to Queen Elizabeth Park.
Board chair Jan Wright says the Transit project, which separates traffic on the state highway from the main trunk railway, makes both networks safer and more efficient.
It also will ensure SH1 is compatible with potential development of Transmission Gully and has minimal impact on the nearby wetland areas, Dr Wright says.
