Council allocates funds to prevent crime in Manukau

Manukau City Council's Community Safety Committee today approved funding of $89,000.00 in one-off grants to 15 Manukau community groups and service providers offering crime prevention programmes within the city.

The funding for these one-off grants was included in the Council's Crime Prevention Action Plan, adopted in December 2003. Allocation was determined under five crime prevention categories which were: anti-violence and family violence education or marketing campaigns ($18,000), Maori crime prevention initiatives ($11,000), youth at risk of offending programmes ($20,000), young offenders (medium - high risk) programmes ($20,000), and crime prevention programmes for children ($20,000).

"The budget was available this financial year - meaning funds would have to be allocated by 30 June. The best way to do this was through one-off grants so the funds could make an immediate difference in the community," says Councillor Alan McIntyre, deputy chairperson of the Community Safety Committee.

Some 30 applications for grants were received against criteria that targeted the most at-risk and high-priority crimes, victims and criminals in Manukau, as identified in the Crime Prevention Action Plan.
