Residents defeat Council

The Eden Epsom Residents Association is pleased that Auckland City Council has finally acknowledged residents concerns at a proposed development on cherished local parks in Mt Eden featuring a 5,000 square metre development by a private sports club on public land, with assistance from Council.

An extra-ordinary meeting of the Hobson and Eden Albert Community Boards on 16th June saw the boards voting to support a concept plan that rejects the proposed development.

Local resident Bettina Latham addressed the meeting, pointing out that the open green space had benefits to the wider community. “Due to the school zoning of this area, there will always be a lot of children here, and the population density will continue to increase. We need open spaces for children to get away from TV and play-stations to reap the benefits of sunshine and fresh air. Not only should we be providing this for our own children, but also the future generations to come.”

“We are pleased that Council has, after months of lobbying, acknowledged the very real and serious concerns that many residents have about the proposed development. We look forward to working with Council officers to ensure the concept plan voted on is the best that the whole community can develop, for the good of future generations” says Christopher Dempsey, chair of the Eden Epsom Residents Association.
