Creative Communities' Grants Benefit Manukau Artists

The Creative Communities Manukau City Scheme ran a special one-off funding round in early 2004, seeking applications for three $10,000 Grants. The scheme, a partnership between Creative Communities, who provide funding, and Manukau City Council, who facilitate the scheme, this time targeted the city's creative initiatives to the delight of the successful recipient arts and cultural groups of the city.

The grants labeled 'Creative Manukau' were for new works that reflect the vibrancy and artistic flair of Manukau. At its meeting in Received: from GWMCC-MTA by fsgate.manukau.govt.nApril this year the Creative Communities Assessment Committee selected three projects.

'The Great ARTdoors Project', will be undertaken by four artists, led by project leader, photographer Terry Klavenes, who will work collaboratively to create two billboard sized artworks that will displayed all around the city. Their work will reflect the diverse multi cultural nature of Manukau, along with the rapidly developing and changing face of the city.

And the second grant goes to the Manukau City Orchestral Society - for the creation of 'The Voyage' a musical composition and special performances. The Society will commission composer Leonie Holmes to create a piece of music that is unique to Manukau. It will have special significance as it will be played at the eagerly awaited opening of the Telstra Clear Events Centre in 2005.

Terry Spragg, Chairperson of Manukau City Orchestral Society says, 'We are very excited at this opportunity to showcase a new musical work with a uniquely Manukau flavour at the opening of this magnificent Centre, which will be the focus of attention for present and the future generations of Manukau people".

The other funding grant goes to the NZ Society of Authors - Writers in residence in programme, who will organise for a well-known and published writer to run writing workshops for Manukau's writers. This will appeal to all the budding writers who have always meant to get their writing career on track.

Chris Szekely, Manager Manukau Libraries says, "The project has involved a very close association with Manukau Libraries and the NZ Society of Authors, and we are very pleased with the outcome. The Creative Communities Funding Scheme aligns with Council's strategic directions document 'Tomorrow's Manukau', in actively supporting the development of artistic and cultural initiatives which ultimately enhance the lives of our residents.

"All recipients of the funding will enrich our city giving artists and performers the opportunity to exhibit their talent and stamp an individuality on our city - Manukau Face of the Future®"

These works will take place over the next year.
