GEOLOGICAL TOURS Inside the Mountain - PUKEKAWA

We live in a unique city. Auckland is built on a volcanic field of nearly fifty volcanic cones, one of those cones sits beneath Auckland Museum and its treasures. Known to the Maori as Pukekawa, the volcano was one of the first to erupt on the Auckland isthmus, some time between 55,000 and 140,000 years ago.

For two days only, visitors to the Museum have a chance to take a look into the excavation site of the landmark Grand Atrium Project and glimpse beneath the surface of the volcanic cone under the Museum. Museum geologist, Mike Eagle, will talk about the eruptions that formed the Domain from vantage points of the Museum that are usually closed to the public. There will also be the chance to handle some of the lava bombs that have been found during the excavations.

The tours will be taking place on Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 August, departing at 9am, 10am, 11am, 1pm, 2pm and 3pm. Some of the walk with be outside so come prepared to take on the weather! Adults - $7 Children and Members - $2 (No further Museum donation is requested)
