Mayoral candidate supports Sister City with Najaf

24 August 2004

Mayoral candidate supports Sister City with Najaf.

"Christchurch should have Najaf as a sister city. The people of Najaf are putting up a heroic fight against Western imperialism at the moment and the United States is currently bombing positions in the city. We should be siding with these people, not the invading and occupying forces" says mayoral candidate Sam Kingi for the Anti-Capitalist Alliance.

"We should also be demanding the withdrawal of all occupying forces including New Zealand's armed forces. New Zealand army engineers are not needed in Iraq, Iraq has thousands of engineers, so why do they need the 60 that the Labour government has supplied?" says Sam Kingi.

"Workers in the West need to extend solidarity to people in the Third World as our enemies are the same people. The people that send armies to oppress the people of the Third World are the same people that keep our wages and conditions down. If we can unite we can defeat them and their capitalist allies" says Sam Kingi.

Sam Kingi added "I also think we should extend our solidarity to the Palestinians who are being repressed by the state of Israel. I would like to see the Palestinian flag flying at the Sister City roundabout by the Christchurch International Airport."
