Fashion, Feathers and … Intestines!

On at Auckland Museum are four new temporary exhibitions ranging in scope from the bizarre to the beautiful.

We take a look at the WORLD of fashion, and juxtapose it against the way fashion used to be. We open up the exquisite beauty of birds and then take a dive into the fascinations of the human body.

The retrospective ‘We Fought Fashion – and Lost: WORLD 1989 – 2005’ pays homage to New Zealand’s avante-garde fashion designers Denise L’Estrange-Corbet and Francis Hooper of WORLD. While ‘Fashion on Wheels: the New Zealand Gown of the Year’ takes a nostalgic look at the fairytale fashion competition that won the hearts of the nation between 1958 and 1964. Both exhibits are on display until 7 November 2004.

In our pictorial gallery is ‘Preen’, a collection of handcrafted masterpieces on display for the first time. This rare collection of nineteenth century books features hand-crafted lithographs of some of New Zealand’s most beautiful birds, many of which are now extinct. The exhibition runs from 17 September to 28 November 2004.

And new to ‘Unseen Worlds’ is ‘Where the Sun Don’t Shine: A Journey through the Digestive System’, the exhibition that every kid will want to see. Footage taken by the swallowed “capsule camera” follows the day in the life of a healthy human digestive system. There’s intestines, there’s bubbles, and more. ‘Unseen Worlds’ finishes on 3 October 2004.
