VOTERS STOP EASTERN MOTORWAY
"Auckland voters have stopped the proposed Eastern Motorway," incoming Action Hobson councillor Christine Caughey said tonight.
"Aucklanders have sent an overwhelming message that the motorway is not the right solution to Auckland's traffic woes. They have voted for Rapid Transit Solutions.
"Now is the time for this generation of Aucklanders to finally make the serious commitment to deliver the kinds of Rapid Transit Solutions that all other major international cities take for granted.
"With a new Mayor, a new Council and an open-mined approach we can finally make progress."
Christine Caughey was the top-polling candidate in the Hobson Ward with over 10,000 votes. Action Hobson's Richard Simpson was also elected with more than 8,000 votes.
Richard Simpson said that addressing Auckland's transport woes could not be achieved by adding a train line here and a train station there.
"We need a serious and fully-integrated approach - modern rail, better buses, fast ferries and all with integrated fares and timetabling. It will be expensive. We must have one of the best systems in the world and we must be innovative in how we finance it. Action Hobson will start work tomorrow."
