Phill Matthias from Dermagraphic Tattoo Studios is part of Ponsonby’s soul. Phill was comfortable with anyone. As a tattoo artist he was renowned for his creativity and attention to detail. He was instrumental in the education of a new generation of tattoo artists, including Otis Frizell. Phill was an original who grew his business as Ponsonby gentrified. He was a business leader, and was recognised as such through his position within the Ponsonby Business Association.
An early adopter of everything new, Phill was true to himself, and gathered a wide circle of friends and admirers. At 12pm Phill will be carried from his College Hill studio, where he has been lying in state, to Schnapper Rock Crematorium for our final goodbyes. His cortege will pass through his beloved Ponsonby Road.
