Motorway resealing affects traffic lanes on Harbour bridge

The moveable lane barrier on the Auckland Harbour Bridge will remain in its present 4/4 (four lanes northbound and four lanes southbound) configuration until Monday 17 January when it will once again revert to a 5/3 configuration each way during the morning and evening peak periods.

Transit regional manager (acting), Richard Hancy, says that the moveable barrier is being kept in its Christmas-New Year configuration (when traffic volumes are generally lower) because of resealing activity being undertaken on the southbound lanes of the motorway through St Mary's Bay.

'This resealing work, which starts immediately south of the bridge, creates an unevenness on the road surface, making it impossible to deploy the moveable barrier with any safety. We will start using the barrier again once the work is completed and will be doing so in the early hours of Monday morning, in time for the morning peak traffic," he says.

Mr Hancy says Transit is using this period to service the two moveable lane barrier machines, which operate twice daily throughout the year.
