Fresh Start For Kapiti Island Homestay Monitoring Committee

A Kapiti Island homestay Monitoring Committee was finally established recently with a meeting which was the first since an Environment Court declaration last year confirmed its legitimate membership.

Chairman elect Graeme Ebbett says he is pleased that the committee has “wiped the slate clean” with a motion rendering minutes of initial meetings “null & void” because “that allows us to avoid relitigating issues of the past and now get on with the primary function of independent monitoring of the homestay resource consent as required by the Court Order. I am pleased that KCDC also appears to support that view”.

The private commercial homestay operated by John Barrett and Amo Clark, is on a small remnant enclave of Maori land bordering Crown land at the northern tip of Kapiti Island. The island is 99% owned by the Crown as a nature reserve and sanctuary of last resort for endangered species of native fauna and flora.

Ebbett says that one of the first items on the agenda for the next meeting is to verify that pre-conditions of consent have in fact been met.
