Ormiston Road Closes This Sunday Until November 2006

Ormiston Road, between Jeffs Road and Chapel Road in East Tamaki, will be closed to all vehicles from this Sunday 20 March 2005 to November 2006.

Motorists are advised to use the signposted detour through the recently upgraded Stancombe Road and Murphys Road North in the interim.

The closure is required to allow earthworks to be carried out for Barry Curtis Park, the Flat Bush Town Centre, the new Ormiston Road Bridge, construction of three storm water ponds and Watercare’s main trunk sewer.

During the closure, Ormiston Road will be rebuilt. The plan is to convert it from a rural to an urban arterial road that will be able to accommodate the area’s rapidly expanding population.

The earth removed from the park and pond will be used for the building platform for the new Flat Bush Town Centre.

Flat Bush is New Zealand’s largest new urban development. It is expected to accommodate 40,000 people, a population the size of Whangarei, within the next 15 years.

Barry Curtis Park will be the prime outdoor recreation and open space area for the township. There will be large amounts of landscape art, wetland walks, sports fields, and restored waterways. A new landmark bridge, linking Chapel Road with the new town centre, will effectively lift Ormiston Road over the 100 year flood plain and allow future park users to get from one side of the park to the other without the need to cross a busy arterial road.
