Pacific Island Advisory Committee Needs A New Member

The Pacific Island Advisory Committee (PIAC) of Manukau City Council is holding a special election to select one member to represent the voices of the Niue people of Manukau.

77,550 Pacific peoples, (or 31% of all New Zealand’s Pacific population) reside in Manukau City, making it the Pacific Island capital of New Zealand. Furthermore almost a third of Manukau’s diverse population is made up of Pacific people. Manukau City Council recognised the significance of this a number of years ago and established PIAC in 1990, which has become a key link between Manukau City Council and the Pacific communities.

The Committee is made up of representatives from Tonga, Niue, Cook Islands, Samoa, Fiji and Tokelau and other smaller islands. Its key objectives are to assist the Council in raising awareness of Pacific issues; increasing participation by Pacific peoples in civic and community activities; and improving understanding of local government issues amongst Pasefika people.

The Committee has a formal meeting once a month. Members also represent PIAC at various forums and functions throughout the City. They also work closely with the Niue community to provide feedback to Council on matters affecting the Pacific Island people of the City.
