Lower Queen Street design framework progresses

Auckland City has commissioned an urban design framework for lower Queen Street, centred around the Jean Batten State Building and neighbouring site.

A moratorium agreed between Auckland City and the Bank of New Zealand in March will continue until the framework has been completed.

The framework is being developed by an independent Auckland urban designer and architect, Mario Madayag, the chief consulting architect for the Britomart rail station. The framework will detail the key urban design features of this part of the city, identifying what is important about the area and defining the urban character.

Once the framework has been confirmed, any proposed development for the site will be reviewed by the Urban Design Panel in relation to the framework’s recommendations.

Meanwhile, Auckland City has sought a declaratory judgement from the Environment Court on the status of a demolition consent, on the Jean Batten State Building, and whether the Resource Management Amendment Act extends the consent from two to five years.
