City backs Chinese community’s waste education campaign

Auckland City, in partnership with Manukau, Papakura, North Shore, Waitakere and Rodney councils, is helping sponsor the Chinese Conservation Education Trust’s 12-month waste reduction campaign, which begins in May.

The aim of the campaign is to promote environmental awareness and advocate effective waste reduction practices among the Chinese community in the Auckland region.

The campaign will cover topics such as recycling, household and garden waste (including the Create Your Own Eden programme), composting, hazardous waste and healthy alternatives to household chemicals.

Councillor Neil Abel, chairperson of the Works and Services Committee, said “The Chinese Conservation Education Trust has been active in getting waste minimisation initiatives going, and we are looking forward to encouraging and supporting them in their work.”

The trust was launched in 2002 and has 700 members in the Auckland region.

Stella Chan, trust chairperson, says the trust is very excited about the waste reduction campaign.

“This is our first joint partnership with all the local councils. We believe it will be a major conservation project in the Chinese community in Auckland over the next 12 months,” says Ms Chan.
