Council partnership helps new graduates engineer their future

Manukau City Council has joined forces with two top firms to give civil engineering graduates a strong foundation for a great career. Project New Grad is a three-year development programme managed in partnership between Manukau City Council, Fulton Hogan (a roading and infrastructure construction company) and GHD Limited (one of the world's top 50 engineering and architecture firms).

"By spending at least a year in each organisation, graduates gain vital experience in the local government, contracting and consultancy sectors of civil engineering," says Robyn McCulloch, Manager Business Performance and the Council's sponsor of Project New Grad.

The Council's current Project New Grad, John Blower, spent the first five months of 2005 with Manukau Water and is now with the Council's Transportation and Stormwater teams.

"Applying for the project was an easy decision. It's a fantastic opportunity to work for three different organisations. I get to use a greater range of skills and gain understanding of engineering from three different view points. It's a great opportunity and one I encourage other grads to take up," says John.

To be considered for the programme, candidates must have completed a Bachelor of Engineering degree (Civil) and be a New Zealand citizen or have permanent residence in New Zealand.
