Auckland City seizes unregistered dogs in Otahuhu blitz

Auckland City seized six unregistered dogs from Otahuhu properties last Tuesday.

Auckland City’s team leader for regulatory services, Geoff Atherfold, says the seizures were in response to a continued lack of cooperation from the dogs’ owners, who were refusing to register their dogs, in addition to a range of other offences.

“It is vital that dog owners take responsibility for their dogs, by following Auckland City’s dog regulations,” says Mr Atherfold. “These particular owners continually refused to register their dogs despite a number of infringements being issued - the only remaining option for us was to impound the dogs.”

Search warrants were obtained in order to impound the dogs and police provided additional support. At several addresses, the occupants were required to be restrained due to their aggression towards the officers.

To date, none of the dog owners have made inquiries about the return of their dogs.

All Auckland city dog owners have until 1 August 2005 to register their dog for the next 12 months. A registration form was sent to all owners in late May and must be completed and sent by to the council by the above deadline.
