Manukau Recycler wins Business Award

Manukau City Council wishes to congratulate Jim Laughton of J & J Laughton on winning the Maori Businessman's Award for the Auckland Region. J & J Laughton is the Council's contractor for collecting tyres during the annual inorganic collection (which began on 4 July in Mangere) for recycling. The company has been doing so for the last five years.

This year was the first time a category for Maori businessmen was introduced in the award. Originally, the focus was on Maori businesswomen.

Mr Laughton was chosen out of 200 entrants. Selection criteria included categories such as market growth, profit, economy and environmental. The Bank of New Zealand, the Department of Labour and ACC were some of the high-profile companies that judged the entrants. The Maori Queen and PM Helen Clarke presented the awards. Rubber chips from tyres collected for recycling have become highly desired for use in horse arenas. A second horse arena has been established in Clevedon using tyre chips from tyres collected in Manukau. Last year, Mr Langdon collected 104 tonnes of tyres in Manukau for recycling.
