Spin a yarn about Queen Street

Spin a yarn about Queen Street

If you have a story to tell about Queen Street’s past then Auckland City wants to hear from you.

As part of the Queen Street upgrade project due to begin mid-September, Auckland City would like to hear from anyone who has a yarn to spin about the city’s most important mainstreet.

The yarns will help the council build a record of Queen Street’s human history and may be incorporated into new artworks to express the character and experiences of Auckland’s favourite mainstreet. The stories may also be included on the Auckland City website.

All yarns received before 19 August will go into the draw to win a double pass to Sir Howard Morrison’s 50 Years on Stage special tribute concert at the Civic Theatre on 4 September.

The winners will also have the opportunity to meet Sir Howard Morrison and Dame Malvina Major, also celebrating 50 years since her first paid engagement, after the event.

The upgrade is a key project under Auckland’s CBD Into the future strategy and will see Queen Street revitalised into the vibrant, exciting, world-class mainstreet of Auckland and New Zealand.

The request for Queen Street yarns also forms part of Heritage week which takes place 12 – 18 September.

Email your oldest memory of Queen Street to queenstreetyarns@aucklandcity.govt.nz or post a letter to Queen Street Yarns, c/- Brenda Railey, Auckland City, Private Bag 92516, Wellesley Street, Auckland 1036.
