Mt Eden Road bus lane extended

Mt Eden Road bus lane extended

From today, motorists driving on Mt Eden Road will notice a change to the citybound bus lane.

The existing bus lane has been extended, now starting just south of Kelly Street and merging with the existing bus lane approximately 100m before Boston Road.

“Around 25 buses an hour travel along Mt Eden Road in morning peak traffic,” says Councillor Richard Simpson, chairperson of Auckland City Council’s Transport and Urban Linkages Committee.

The extended bus lane aims to reduce bus travel times on this key commuter route, and will also benefit cyclists and motorcyclists who can use the lane to bypass traffic queues.

“Bus lanes are Auckland City’s part in a regional effort to make Auckland’s roads work more effectively, and encourage more people to use buses by making bus travel more reliable and efficient.

“We are committed to moving people and freight more efficiently, maximising the potential of our existing roads. Public transport initiatives such as this bus lane will help dramatically in achieving this aim,” says Mr Simpson.

To ensure pedestrians can safely access the Mt Eden rail station and bus stops on either side of Mt Eden Road, a pedestrian refuge has been installed in the centre of the road, opposite the entrance to the station.

Nineteen kerbside parking spaces are no longer available between 7am and 9am, Monday to Friday, while the bus lane is operating.
