Papatoetoe Residents Fight Back!
Papatoetoe Residents Fight Back!
A group representing Papatoetoe residents, the Hunters Corner Town Centre Association, the Papatoetoe Community Board and the Papatoetoe Neighbourhood Support Trust is organising a rally to demonstrate the level of anger and frustration that residents feel about the effects of street prostitution in their community. The rally will be held 9.00 – 10.00 pm on Thursday 1st September, on the corner of Charles St and Great South Road.
The group organising the rally see street prostitution as an election issue; the claim that there has been a reduction in reported crime does not make the residents of Papatoetoe feel any safer. Over the past nine years the Hunters Corner shopping area has been plagued by street prostitution with its associated problems of graffiti, violent crime, offensive litter and solvent abuse. Despite video surveillance and additional policing, the problem has been getting worse and is having a harmful effect on business activity and the quality of life in Papatoetoe.
This peaceful rally will be an opportunity for Local and Central Government politicians to hear the voice of Papatoetoe and for organisers to gather signatures for a petition supporting an amendment to the Legalisation of Prostitution Act (sponsored by the Manukau City Council), which will outlaw street prostitution.
