Ports of Auckland supports Heritage Week

Ports of Auckland is getting in behind Auckland City’s Heritage Week which runs all this week - 12 to 18 September - by providing free one-hour heritage boat tours of the Auckland port.

“Heritage Week is a great project to support,” says Ports of Auckland Chief Executive Geoff Vazey. “Auckland was founded on its port, so the city’s heritage is Ports of Auckland’s heritage.”

In 1840, New Zealand’s first Governor, Captain William Hobson, established the new colony’s first capital on the southern shore of the Waitemata Harbour because of “its central position and the facility and safety of its port”.

The tours will highlight the many historical points of interest of the port and waterfront. An onboard commentary will explain how the city and the port have developed and changed together over more than 150 years.

Auckland residents, especially port neighbours, are encouraged to take advantage of this once a year opportunity. The Heritage Boat Tours are on Saturday, September 17 at 11am and 1pm. Bookings are through Fullers 09 367 9111.
