Tanker spill contained

A fast and coordinated response helped avoid a major pollution incident in Pukekohe last night.

Emergency services were called on Monday night to a diesel tanker operated by Mini Tankers that had overturned on Pukekohe East Road in stormy conditions. The tanker was carrying 5200 litres of diesel.

Auckland Regional Council pollution response officer Adrian Heays says co-operation between Mini Tankers, the Fire Service, Franklin District Council, contractors, police and pollution response officers averted a major pollution incident.

"Mini Tankers and ARC staff put in place a very effective containment plan which resulted in almost full recovery of the diesel," Mr Heays says.

ARC pollution response officers put booms and pads in the stream to contain and absorb the diesel while Mini Tankers, the Fire Service, police and others secured the scene.

"Approximately 100 litres of diesel leaked into the surrounding soil and a small amount seeped into a nearby stream. A site assessment undertaken today satisfied ARC staff that long term environmental effects are unlikely," Mr Heays says.

Mini Tankers is organising the removal and disposal of the contaminated soil.
