North Shore City Council is considering whether to buy the privately-owned Victoria Theatre in Devonport because of its heritage value.
This is not provided for in North Shore City's 2004 - 2014 City Plan, and before making a decision to amend the plan, council is required to consult with the community.
A summary of the proposal - including a submission form - will arrive in letterboxes across the city this week.
It includes the three options being considering in relation to Victoria Theatre, and people are invited to indicate which one they would like the council to pursue.
These include purchasing and leasing, not purchasing, or purchasing, placing a heritage covenant on, then selling Victoria Theatre.
Victoria Theatre in Devonport was built in 1912, but it was a major alteration in 1929 that gave the building its current distinctive appearance.
It was originally a purpose-built cinema, and continued to be until 1992, but is not currently in regular use.
In the North Shore City District Plan, Victoria Theatre is classified as a Category A building, but is not on the New Zealand Historic Places Trust register.
The submission period for consultation runs from next Thursday, November 3, to Friday, December 9.
More information will be available from November 3 at North Shore City libraries and area offices, at www.northshorecity.govt.nz, or by calling Actionline, the council's 24-hour, seven-day-a-week call centre, on 486 8600.
