open day at museum
Auckland Museum is giving Aucklanders the chance to have a sneak peak at their Grand Atrium Project (due to open December 2006) on Sunday 6 November with a special Open Day. Guided tours will traverse the Museum and through the as yet unfinished $68 million refurbishment known as the Grand Atrium from 10.00am - 4.00pm (last entry for the tour), Adults $10, children free; enquiries: bookings@aucklandmuseum.com
Follow the yellow tape for a tour starting in one of New Zealand's leading reference libraries, see where the Museum holds some of the oldest books in New Zealand. Work your way down through the back of the building, via Ornithology, Entomology and into the new Southern Atrium. Look up four stories to the clear rimmed roof and admire the suspended dome.
Walk 9 metres below ground to the new basement and meet Delaurus, the Museum's resident dryosaur and explore the newly built collection spaces
Come back up to ground floor and enjoy a sausage (or vegetarian fritter) from the BBQs in the marquee, watch the dancing hip hop diggers and then walk your way to the Museum Store where you can use your 10% discount voucher, return your trail questionaire and go into the draw to win dinner at Non Solo Pizza, Parnell for the family (up to a value of $100).
Please note, that due to OSH regulations, those with limited mobility, wheelchairs or prams are unable to take part in the full tour, but Museum volunteers will be available to take people to a viewing area in the Library and through the Southern Atrium.
