Refuse barges for gulf island boaties this summer

Auckland City Council is encouraging boaties to keep the Hauraki Gulf islands safe and healthy this summer by depositing their rubbish and recycling on refuse barges.

"Boaties will be flocking to the Hauraki Gulf islands over the summer months. We want to help them keep the waters and shoreline as clean as possible by providing a service that will make it easy to dispose of rubbish and recycling," Auckland City's resource recovery manager Warwick Jaine says.

Auckland City will provide the service over the peak summer period, when the islands will be busy with locals and visitors enjoying the Hauraki Gulf's unique environment.

The refuse barges will be moored off Waiheke Island and Great Barrier Island from 20 December 2005 until 7 February 2006 at the following locations:

Waiheke Island - Man O' War Bay
Great Barrier Island - Man of War Passage, Port Fitzroy
