Permanent overnight liquor ban takes effect

A permanent overnight liquor ban takes effect at designated locations throughout North Shore City this Wednesday (December 21).

The new ban applies mainly to beach and foreshore areas, and council park-and-ride bus stations.

It will operate between the hours of 10pm and 6am during daylight saving hours, and between 9pm and 6am outside of daylight saving.

Further town centre and reserve areas may be added at a later date, following the review of the Trading in Public Places Bylaw.

The overnight liquor ban has been introduced to provide a safer environment for the general public, to minimise the problems associated with excessive drinking in some areas, and to assist the police in crime prevention.

The overnight liquor ban will not prevent people from having a glass of wine or can of beer at the beach or at picnic spots outside of the restricted hours.

Signs will be erected at all locations where liquor is banned. A full list of these is available on the council's website at www.northshorecity.govt.nz
