Next stage of Quay Street upgrade begins Monday

Work begins on Monday 16 January on a further $1.2 million stage of the Quay Street footpath upgrade. This follows on from the work undertaken at the entrance to Viaduct Basin and Princes Wharf and along the street on the southern side to Britomart.

All the work will be confined to the northern (portside) footpath from Tinley Street by the Shell station, for a 600-metre stretch to the Ferry Building and is due for completion mid-year.

Two lanes of traffic will be available at all times but pedestrians will be asked to use the already upgraded footpath on the opposite side of the road. Pay and display parking on the portside from Britomart Place to the Ferry Building will not be available during the work.

The upgrade includes new kerbing and wider footpaths of clay paving and asphalt.

An additional 24 pohutukawa trees will be planted along this stretch, reflecting a theme of coastal vegetation on the waterfront. No trees are being removed.

The work schedule is timed to cause minimal disruption to events and cruise liner business and will not impact port operations. The work hours are 7am to 7pm Monday to Friday and Saturday mornings.

It is part of a $7 million Quay Street upgrade to improve the street amenity and is included in the council's $100 million plan to transform the central city's streetscape over the next ten years under Auckland's CBD Into the future strategy.
