National Spotlight On Warkworth’s Transit Woes

National Spotlight On Warkworth’s Transit Woes

Warkworth's increasing concern over Transit New Zealand's moves to block jobs and investment in the town is behind a public meeting being organised by the Warkworth Community Liaison Group.

Opposition Leader, Dr Don Brash will speak at the April 10 event, and host a National Party panel of senior MPs including RMA spokesman Hon Dr Nick Smith, Transport spokesman, Hon Maurice Williamson and Rodney MP Hon Dr Lockwood Smith.

Liaison Group Deputy Chair, Peter Thompson, says the Liaison Group and the Rodney District Council are increasingly concerned over Transit’s actions to block much-needed projects like the $90 million Stockyard Falls centre that would bring 450 new jobs to the town.

He says that the Land Transport Management Act does not give Transit a mandate to put up the road-closed sign to investment and sustainable development in Warkworth.

“This is not just a local issue. It is a national issue. Almost every community in New Zealand has a State Highway running through it. Transit can’t be allowed to shut the country down because the roads are in crisis."
