Awards open for nominations
'Redefining Stereotypes' is the theme for this year's national Youth Week - being marked in Nelson with the second annual Youth Volunteer Awards.
At last year's inaugural event, over 130 young people were received awards at a hugely successful celebration held at The Hub youth centre in New St.
Hub youth worker Sally Wood says the awards recognized over 11,000 hours of voluntary time given to the Nelson/Tasman regions from the young people nominated.
"The awards really gave young people the recognition they deserved," she said. "They covered such a wide range - we loved the comment from a young Maori professional that it was 'just so cool celebrating the geeks, the homies and the trendies at one evening'."
Young people are again organizing the event for 2006, with help from the Nelson City Youth Council, which is also donating money towards special awards, along with support from Volunteer Nelson and The Hub.
The awards cover Nelson and Tasman, and are now open for nominations. Forms are available from Volunteer Nelson. Nominations close on April 27. For more information call Volunteer Nelson on (03) 546 7681, email nvc@ts.co.nz or call in to 50 Halifax St.
