Living Room lights up Durham Street East

Living Room will be lighting up the lives of those passing through Durham Street East between 30 April and 19 May with an eclectic selection of lampshades from the past 50 years.

The installation, called Living Lamps, is guaranteed to surprise, amuse and delight people of all walks of life through its quirky approach of taking an indoor light fixture into an outdoor environment. It builds on the success of the Hang’n’Out washing line installation from the 2005 Living Room series.

Organiser Pitsch Leiser says the light installation of more than 40 lampshades will transform Durham Street East into a colourful thoroughfare sure to have passers-by turning around for a second look.

“This quirky installation entertains during the day through colour texture and movement, and is further enhanced at night with the addition of light,” says Mr Leiser.

Living Lamps is part of Living Room, a series of installations and activities funded by the CBD targeted rate that seeks to enliven the CBD’s public spaces.

Other happenings taking place in the CBD as part of the Living Room series include Proverbial Auckland, Morning Tea, Axminster, Multicultimedia, Skeletons in the Closet, and Musical Bus Stops.

The Living Room series is funded from the CBD targeted rate and is part of the Auckland’s CBD Into the future strategy, which aims to transform Auckland’s CBD into one of the world’s most vibrant and dynamic business and cultural centres.
