Regional Civil Defence update

June 19, 2006

Regional Civil Defence update

Light snow falls around Canterbury region in the last 24 hours have not been enough to dampen the recovery from heavy snowfalls of a week ago, says Bob Upton, controller of Canterbury's Civil Defence Emergency Management Group.

“There are still several districts – Ashburton, Mackenzie, Timaru and Waimate – where around 2000 customers remain without power and without phone lines. However, there are an extra 100 power lines staff working on connections in these affected areas. Electricity generators have been distributed by the army and local authorities with more to follow for urgent needs, organised by the Ministry of Civil Defence.”

More snow is forecast for already snow-covered areas mid-week, which means that Civil Defence staff are continuing in a monitoring role.

People are advised to check on their neighbours’ welfare and make sure they have plenty of the following:

*Fuel for heating and cooking requirements
*Enough food and water for an extended period
*Mobile phones and means to recharge them from a car battery
*Battery operated radio

More information is available on: www.cdemcanterbury.govt.nz and there is also help via the Ministry of Social Development’s helpline:
0800 779 997, weekends 8am to 5 pm, weekdays 7am to 8pm.

For further information, call the appropriate district councils. Ask for the media liaison officer for Civil Defence at those councils.
