For real: public art competition at the CCL

Auckland City Libraries is calling for submissions to design and install a light installation artwork for the “lantern space” at real cafe at the newly refurbished Central City Library on the corner of Wellesley and Lorne streets.

The objective is to light up the “lantern space”, which features 8m-high exterior glass walls, in order to create optimum street visibility.

The illuminated artwork will help complement the CBD’s cultural precinct, which includes, the library, the Auckland Art Gallery, Lorne Street and Aotea Square. The artwork will also help establish real as a modern, stylish cafe within a world-class library by providing value and vibrancy to visitors, and by encouraging people to feel good about Auckland and its lifestyle.

Kay Forrester, Auckland City Libraries’ marketing manager says a light installation is an integral component of the café design: “By installing a beautiful light artwork, Ian Athfield’s original vision of a beaming lantern attracting visitors will come to life.”

Artists should indicate their intention to submit a preliminary concept by 11 August 2006 by contacting Alyssa Hardy, Auckland City Libraries’ communications coordinator, on 09 373 6861 or alyssa.hardy@aucklandcity.govt.nz .

The closing date to submit a preliminary concept is Monday 28 August. It is envisioned that the artwork will be launched in December 2006.
