Playground arson costs ratepayers dearly

A recent spate of arson attacks on community playgrounds in the Howick and Pakuranga Wards of Manukau will cost ratepayers dearly.

Councillor Dick Quax, chairman of Manukau City Council’s Community Safety Committee is disturbed by last week’s attack on a playground in Gosford Drive which follows other recent arson attacks in Pakuranga and Bucklands Beach.

Councillor Quax says:

“Replacing this playground comes as a direct cost to the city’s ratepayers of $50,000.

“I am asking residents who live near playgrounds to be more vigilant. If you see groups of people gathering around the local playground late at night you can pretty well say they are there for more than just a breath of fresh air and exercise – so give the Police a call.”

Councillor Quax would also like residents to report any fresh tagging or graffiti appearing in their neighbourhoods.

“There is a direct link between tagging, arson and other petty crimes and vandalism”, added Councillor Quax.

Residents can report graffiti and tagging by calling council’s 24 hour Call Centre on 262 5104 and they will arrange for the Manukau Beautification Trust to have it removed.
