On Friday 22nd September 2006, Bicycle Nelson Bays and the Nelson Greens will be celebrating International Car Free Day by providing ‘Free Fuel’ for all people who cycle, walk, scooter, skate or bus to work or school.

Stephen White, Spokesperson for Bicycle Nelson Bays, says “It’s important for people to think about ways in which they can reduce traffic congestion and exhaust emissions. Choosing to bike, walk or bus to work or school 1 or 2 days a week, will reduce congestion and emissions significantly”.

“Studies have shown that traffic congestion can be substantially reduced if only a small number of commuters choose to leave the car at home” says Mr White.

According to the Victoria Transport Policy Institute (Canada): “… traffic congestion is a non-linear function, meaning that a small reduction in urban-peak traffic volume can cause a proportionally larger reduction in delay. For example, a 5% reduction in traffic volumes on a congested highway (for example, from 2,000 to 1,900 vehicles per hour) may cause a 10-30% increase in average vehicle speeds… As a result, even relatively small changes in traffic volume or capacity on congested roads can provide relatively large reductions in traffic delay.” (http://www.vtpi.org/tdm/tdm96.htm)

International Car Free Day is a great chance to make a start.

To collect your reward of ‘Free Fuel’ on Friday 22nd September just stop outside the Post Office, Trafalgar St, Nelson for free toast and spread between 7.30am and 9.00am.
