Drainage Grate Thefts Cost Council $15,000 a Month
Manukau City Council is asking the public and scrap metal dealers to help prevent theft of its metal drainage grates from city roads.
Almost 100 grates were stolen in the last month, replacing them will cost the council $15,000. The grates weigh approximately 20 kgs each.
The thefts appear to be happening mainly in areas where inorganic rubbish is sitting beside the road waiting to be collected.
Manukau City Council Transportation Manager Chris Freke says it seems the grates are being stolen for their scrap metal value.
“We’re asking the public to look out for people stealing the grates and contact the council with the car registration number, a description of the person and vehicle.
“The council is also calling on scrap metal dealers not to buy the grates and give us details of anyone trying to sell them.
“These thefts are costing us a lot of money that could be better spent elsewhere,” Mr Freke says.
